The patio stock is approximately ¾” to 1”thick. The bluestone is delivered to us pre-cut. They start at 12” X 12” squares and go up in 6” intervals. The bluestone hearths and treads are approximately 2”thick. The widest we normally stock in the hearths and treads are 24” wide and the lengths range from 4’ to 8 1/2’ long. All the bluestone is sold by the square foot. If our stock sizes aren’t the sizes you need for your project, we do have the capability to saw the bluestone. You will need to purchase the stock piece of bluestone and then we can saw it for a price per lineal foot.

What is Bluestone?

Bluestone is a popular type of stone in New England. It refers to a specific type of sandstone or wackestone which is found in New York State and North Eastern Pennsylvania. The stone is found in an array of natural colors including: blue, earthy greens and browns and gray. Deeper quarried bluestone can have a richer, darker blue while bluestone from the surface has a lighter hue to it. Bluestone has a high density and a natural ability to withstand harsh weather conditions, it comes in smooth slabs known as Natural Cleft and Flagstone. Bluestone consists primarily of feldspars, quartz, phyllosilicates with some other minerals that are all held together with a strong silicious cement.

Benefits of Bluestone

Bluestone is popular for a range of positive properties, not least because it is cost effective, has long-lasting, distinct color and a fine grain. Bluestone is:

  • Natural, unique appearance to each stone
  • Very strong and durable
  • Easy to install
  • High non-slip rating (suitable for pool patios)
  • Cost-effective
  • Generally weather resistant (can shed/spall with rapid weather shifts)

Uses of Bluestone

You can use bluestone indoors or outdoors but it is typically used for landscaping projects such as patios, walkways, stepping stones, stone steps and feature walls. It may be worth considering that bluestone can get quite hot in intense summer heat, and if you do use bluestone for your pool surround you may get some hot feet! But it will definitely look great..
